Search Engine Optimization with Synergy 8

All website owners will agree that a strong position in a search engine is a great way to increase leads, sales and page visits. This article will show you how to configure your Synergy 8 powered website to rank better in search engines.

SEO is an acronym for "Search Engine Optimization", and refers to the process of ensuring your website appears as highly as possible in search engine results.

1.0 Included SEO Features

Synergy 8 is pre-configured with the following features 'out of the box'. They require no configuration:

  • SEO friendly URLs
  • Automatic sitemap.xml generation
  • Automatic robots.txt generation
  • Integrated feeds RSS, ATOM, for posts (linked by meta data and sitemap)
  • Google products feeds (require submission)

2.0 Content is King

Search engines will not rank your pages unless your website features content written on the topics you expect to be ranked for.

Create pages for each of your services and products on your website, start a blog using the Posts feature, keep writing good content and don't forget to share your articles around social media and other websites.

3.0 Metadata

Metadata are tags which sit "behind the scenes" to describe your website content. Search engines (like Google) use metadata to help understand what your website is about. Metadata can be controlled when editing pages and clicking the "Search Engine Optimization" tab.

3.1 How Metadata Relates to Searches

Metadata fields are often used by search engines as follows:

3.2 Inheritance of Metadata to Child Pages

Each child page in your sitemap will inherit the parent page's title prefix, keywords and description. This means that if you don't have the time to set this metadata on every page, the page will inherit the same metadata as its parent.

Having duplicate metadata between pages is not ideal, however it is better to have duplicate data than no data at all. As an example, let's look at the following shot of a sitemap:

If the page title prefix, keywords and description have been set on the home page, all other pages will have the same SEO data, until you override it. With the above example, if you override the SEO data on the "guitar-lessons" page, those changes will take effect on all the child pages, such as "guitar-lessons-brisbane-northside".

Important: Due to the way pages inherit metadata, you should set metadata on at least the homepage.

3.3 The Page Title

By default the page title is set when you create a new page. To edit the page title of a page you have already created:

  1. Navigate to the pages screen on the dashboard.
  2. Click the page you would like to alter, this will load the page editor.
  3. At the top of the page editor screen there is a field called "Title".
  4. Set a new page title and click the "Save Page" button located on the hand side of the page below the Synergy 8 logo to save your changes.

3.4 Page Title Prefix

The page title prefix is the text that appears before the page title. This is most commonly set as the business name and is set to the website title by default. To change the page title prefix of a page, it's best to change page title prefix of the home page, as this will be inherited by all other pages on the website (until you override it).

A dash "-" character is automatically added between the page title prefix and the page title. For example if the page title was set to "About us" and the page title prefix was set to "Business 1" the overall page title would display in the browser and search engines as - "Business 1 - About us".
To change the home page title prefix:

  1. Navigate to the pages screen on the dashboard.
  2. Click the page title "home".
  3. At the top of the page editor screen there is a tab called "Search Engine Optimisation", click to open this tab.
  4. Alter the "Page Title Prefix" field.
  5. Click the "Save Page" button to save your changes.

3.5 Page Description & Keywords

The page description and keywords are inherited from parent pages in the same way as the page title prefix. To set a page description and keywords:

  1. Navigate to the pages screen on the dashboard.
  2. Click the page you would like to alter, this will load the page editor.
  3. At the top of the page editor screen there is a tab called "Search Engine Optimisation", click to open this tab.
  4. Alter the keywords field, separating each keyword with a comma, for example: "mobile phones, computer, smile".
  5. Alter the description field.
  6. Click the "Save Page" button to save your changes. 

4.0 Google Analytics

While Synergy 8 has built in analytics, Google Analytics can also be used to further measure your site's data.

4.1 Setting up Google Analytics

You can access helpful website analytics from the dashboard, however if you would like to use Google analytics you can enter your GAID (Google Analytics Id) into the design of the website for tracking purposes. To set the Google Analytics Id:

  1. Navigate to the designs screen on the dashboard.
  2. Click the website design currently being used (the default design can be identified with a *).
  3. Click the Additional attributes tab on the top of the editor screen.
  4. Enter your Id in the "Google Analytics Field", your id will be similar to: 1.
  5. Click the "Save Design" button to save your changes.

4.2 Setting up Goal Conversions

To setup goal conversion:

  1. Copy the goal conversion code from Google Analytics.
  2. Edit the page you are wanting the goal to add the conversion code to.
  3. Click "Source" on the bottom left, and paste the source from Google Analytics.

4.3 Commerce Tracking

When Google Analytics is installed using the above method, commerce tracking code will be automatically enabled.  This feature must also be enabled from within your Google Analytics.

Note: You may get reduced conversion results when using "Hosted Payment Methods"  such as PayPal where the user may not be redirected to the website.

5.0 Google Webmaster Tools

Google Webmaster Tools provides you with detailed reports about your pages' visibility on Google.

5.1 Upload of Verification File

  1. Download the file provided.
  2. Edit your website's home page.
  3. Click "Attached Media" on the right.
  4. Upload the file.
  5. Return to the verification process at google.

Having other websites link to your website is critical in improving your ranking.
